Everything Upside

According to Google Translate, that’s what the Dutch-language edition of Out with the In Crowd is called.
My author copies showed up last Friday, and it’s always surreal to see a different Skylar, to see my bio in Dutch, to see my parents’ names wedged among the other Dutch words in the translation. It’s also strange to see the “Vertaald door Marijne Thomas.” It’s weird to think of Marijne studying Out with the In Crowd and communicating it’s message to an audience I was never mindful of. I’m grateful to know that God was mindful of them, that He knew Skylar’s story wasn’t just for those in the states.

I also received word last week that the rights to So Over It were sold to the same house. So that should be releasing sometime in the next year, I imagine.
That’s about all the book news I have for y’all at the moment. I have a couple new projects that I’ve been working on, but no word yet on when those might land on bookstore shelves.
One of the biggest challenges of playing softball or baseball is you regularly jolt from standing around to moving at full speed. Publishing is very similar, where you can wake up one morning with nothing on the horizon … but find out that day that you’ll have three manuscripts due within the year.
Even though I’ve been quiet on this blog, Go Teen Writers is crazy active, so you can connect with me and other writers over there.

Why did they have to get a new Skylar? Or even a new cover? Couldn’t they have used the same one?

Katie, good question!
I’m no expert on all the rules involved, but the cover art belongs to the publishing house. The Dutch-language rights to my book were sold to a different house, but they don’t buy the cover art. My guess is they would rather spend the money designing a cover they feel will appeal to readers over there. But, again, I’m no expert on how all this works.

I am Marijne Thomas…. and I can understand that it must be very weird to see a strange name and a probably very strange language. To answer the ‘cover question’: my guess would be that the original is too American for Dutch readers, too ‘glossy’ for the average Dutch schoolgirl.
