Here comes the flower girl
18 February 2011
McKenna, my 3-year-old, has been asked to be a flower girl in a wedding this September.
When told it involved wearing a dress that would likely twirl, that she would get to carry a basket of flower petals, and that she would be “helping” someone with getting married, she was so excited she couldn’t stand still. Or talk about anything else.
To show her what a flower girl is and does, I pulled out the DVD from our wedding. Here’s something strange – I don’t remember being nervous on my wedding day. I had some unease with having so many eyes trained on me, but I wasn’t shaking or wishing we’d eloped or anything like that.
Yet watching my wedding made me so nervous and uncomfortable. Isn’t that weird? Why would that bother me? The second I saw myself appear at the top of the stairs, I started pacing our living room even though it was nearly 7 years ago, and everything went fine.
And it was all I could do not to critique every little thing about myself. Like, could I have possible been less graceful walking down the aisle? And why didn’t I look at my future-husband? In movies, they always have that moment where the bride locks eyes on her man … yeah, didn’t happen at my wedding. I was apparently busy greeting all the guests.
Every time the camera cut to me, however, McKenna was like, “Where’s the flower girl?” In her eyes, the flower girl was clearly the star. And our flower girl was darn cute, so I can’t really blame her.
So, if you’ve yet to get married, here are my two nuggets of advice: 1. Look at your future-husband when you walk down the aisle and 2. Practice your posture.
Oh, and have a flower girl. For some little girl in your life, it’ll be a dream job.
